Personally, I try to read every word. However, as I read through all of David Garland’s massive tome on 1 Corinthians I do admit that I read some parts more carefully than others.
I find that I don’t have a lot of retention when I read, so my approach is to read with a highlighter the first time and then go back through and really study the main points. Much of it depends on whether I am going to be tested on the material too.
