Great job while in seminary

I discovered this one while starting to work on the scholarship list last night and figured it might be worth its own post.

Apparently, UPS has a scholarship program for its employees (can you say $3000 a year). Not only that, but it is available to part-time employees. That’s right, work a part-time job for a big company that offers health benefits and get $3000 for your tuition. It seems like a sweet gig to me.

Anyone out there that works for UPS? Anyone tried this program? Let us know… we’re all interested (well, at least I am).

  • Thanks for the post. Sounds like a sweet gig. I think I’m going to check it out further. Thanks for all your efforts here.

  • Yeah, I have looked at UPS’ program for tuition assitance and it seems awesome… does it apply beyond the undegraduate level?
I believe its called “earn and learn” if I’m not mistaken…

  • Daniel, I looked around some more and see no stipulation about graduate school. However, I did notice that there is some limitation by location. Check out this UPS Factsheet on the subject.

  • Many students at Southern work for UPS–it is a great gig if you are single or married without kids. They have no stipulations on tuition reimbursement other than you must be working there for a certain amount of time during and when the semester ends. The benefits are great but the hours suck.

  • I live in Louisville and I’ve worked at UPS since July ’07. Yes, they have a program called earn & learn. Part-time employees are eligible from day one. You get $1500/semester up to $3000/year. Which for Southern students covers 9 units (3 classes) except for about $200 so it is pretty nice. The money can be used for course costs and registration fees as well as $25 for books per class.
The health benefits just switched (for the bad) for any new employees. You have to wait till 12 months of employment to get dental/health/vision and dependants have to wait 18 months to get those same benefits. Once you get them though they are top of the line and you don’t pay for it (you do however pay $23/month in union dues which covers it and other things).
On top of all of that the pay is good. Terry mentioned that the hours suck, but really you can work 3-8 am, 10-4, or like 5-10 so you can pick your hours. Most sem students work 3-8 (myself included) and I don’t mind it at all. Just depends on what kind of person you are. I get 27-30 hours/week. That’s about all I got…hope it helps.

  • Thanks for the props Andrew. Hope it all works out at UPS for you. Keep us posted.

  • How did I miss this post? I worked for UPS during my last year of high school. It was really a great job. The hours were not the greatest (I worked 3:30am-8:00am), but I enjoyed the work. I spent most of the time outside driving a Tug (though in Canada, thankfully, we had cabs on them with small heaters which was great in the winter). It paid well, they were very flexible with my schedule, and as mentioned in the post, had benefits. I regret leaving the job for a better-paying landscaping job because now that I do the math, I realize I probably would have done better to stay there all throughout college than just working summers full-time.

Now that I find out about the scholarship funds, I wish even more I would have stayed. So if you are thinking of working there, I encourage you to do so. It’s one of the best options for part-time work out there.

  • My cousin goes to New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He works for UPS and attests that this is true. He gets the scholarship and only works part time. It is GREAT! He’s trying to get me to work there as well for when I go to seminary in January. Let’s just hope they are hiring!
