And so it begins…

So, I just returned home from my first official, residential, seminary class. Before the class started I was just sitting there, taking it all in… 6 years to get here… wow!

So, the class was great. The 3 hours FLEW by. While the material wasn’t the most interesting content I couldn’t help but smile and try to suck everything I could out of the professor. It was GREAT!

I went vintage notes style and was in the minority BIG time (only one other vintage note taker in the class).

A big lesson I learned tonight is that that it is distracting to sit towards the back of the class because you can see everyone’s computer and what all they are doing… I almost had to rend my garment and braid a rope together for an old fashioned temple cleansing as I watched a girl in class go online to pay her tuition, check and reply to several emails, visit a website, and, the icing on the cake, create an Evite for a birthday party. Least I REALLY rant about this young lady, I’ll bite my tongue and simply call it a night.

One day down… many, many more to go.

  • Agreed. I’ve always found that I was able to stay more focused by sitting at the front of the class. I’m easily distracted by all those folks sitting in front of me, so I found sitting in the front row the best way to overcome that. I also found that I tend to take better notes on paper as I get distracted with a laptop in front of me and am tempted to read blog posts & E-mails rather than giving my full attention to the lecture. Happy studying!

  • Where I attend seminary, they allow laptops, but they have a new policy that students are not allowed to do anything on their computer during classtime that is not directly class-related. I bet if the profs wanted to they could check on this. If we are given a policy like this and we give our word, we need to follow it. Why pay tuition to goof off?

  • Ah Just A Guy (is that what I’m supposed to call you here?), I’m so excited for you and can’t wait for the stories to come. It makes me so impatient waiting for the Fall when I’m in your shoes. With the new Mac, i can now subscribe to this blog’s RSS through mail, so I can access it much easier than before, so know that I will be right here with you, reading your journey, coveting them as wisdom for my journey to come. Thanks.

By the way, I’ve started using this program called MacSword. It blows E-Sword out of the water and is also completely free. Any thoughts on that program and any other amazing, simple, and cheap pieces of Bible Software?

Also, I’m reading “Brothers We Are Not Professionals” by Piper. I spend my whole time weeping through it as I feel this weight increase on my shoulders, my inadequacy grow for this task, and my hope and love in my only Assurance flourish as I love Him more and more. Amazing book.

  • -paul (and other readers) if you’d like to get Going to Seminary updates in you mailbox, you can simply subscribe using the feedburner email subscription box in the upper right hand corner of this page.

Also, here is a link to MacSword for those interested.

tlange – I really like that idea. I bet most students don’t even realize what they are doing… While my school obviously doesn’t have that policy, I’m thinking about making some flyers with a pic of the Going to Seminary computer guy and have a under it have the link to: http://www.goingtoseminary.com/vintage-notes
